Carl's Place has been feeding people in Penhook, Virginia since 1947 — long before Smith Mountain Lake put this corner of Franklin County on the map. It doesn't look like much from the road, and that's kind of the point.
Before the Lake Changed Everything
When Carl's opened, Penhook was a quiet rural crossroads — Smith Mountain Lake didn't exist yet. The world around it changed; Carl's didn't.
The Surprise Inside
From outside it reads as a gas station — brick facade, canopy, convenience store shelves. Step through the door and there's a full dining room with wood-paneled booths, red-tiled floors, a vintage model airplane overhead, and walls covered in local memorabilia and historical photographs.
What People Come Back For
French toast, the Carl's Burger, pancakes, homemade pies — guests mention these by name. Breakfast runs all day, and prices are honest.
